Letters from Kids

Lilavatibai Podar High School
Mumbai

Dear Friend,

I have many friends in India and abroad but I was very keen to have a pen friend from across the border. To start with let me tell you a little about myself. My name is Alexander but people call me Alex. People say I am naughty but I believe a little bit of naughtiness does not hurt. I live with my parents in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India and let me tell you its one of the most crowded places in the world. I study in class seven in Lilavantibai Podar High School which is one of the most prestigious schools in Mumbai.

I am sure that you have some knowledge about India especially with the interest generated during cricket matches played between our countries, but, let me tell you some interesting facts about India . India is a land of many cultures and religions. India got her name from the river Indus which, in ancient times, formed the western boundary of India . India lies to the north of the equator protected by natural boundaries in the form of oceans in the east, south, and west and the Himalayan mountains in the north. India is the seventh largest country in the world and second largest in Asia . Ganga is the longest river and K2 is the highest peak in India and second highest in the world. Another famous river is Brahmaputra also called the Red River . Out of the eleven famous deserts in the world, Thar is the seventh largest in area shared with you country. There are many religious communities like Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Jews. India has eighteen officially recognized languages. Our national flag is a horizontal tricolor of saffron which stands for courage, white which stands for truth and purity and green which stands for truth in speech and purity of thought. The blue wheel with twenty-four spokes signifies progress. The Ashoka's Pillar is our national emblem. Jana-gana-mana is our national anthem and Vande matharam our national song. The Lotus is our national flower, the Peacock our national bird, the tiger our national animal. Hockey is our national game, though cricket is more popular.

As I have given you some information about India I too would like to know about the culture and tradition of your country and of course do not forget to write about yourself and your interests.

Yours affectionately,

Alexander George
VII
